Cookies, in brief
Cookies are small values stored by a browser and associated with a website. Other browser technologies, such as localStorage, can retain information on the device without operating in exactly the same way. Privacy rules can apply to storing or accessing device information regardless of the technology's name.
The published editorial code
The editorial pages and their script do not set cookies or write to localStorage or sessionStorage. They do not include advertising, analytics or cross-site tracking code. Navigation state, scroll effects and contact previews are held in page memory and are not deliberately retained by the site after the page is closed or reloaded.
Web hosting and browser operation may involve separate technical processes, including request logs and ordinary caching of files. Caching is not the same as an advertising cookie. Any separately presented consent controls apply to the services and purposes described in those controls; this page's description of editorial code does not override them.
Correspondence, clipboard and downloads
Typing in the correspondence slip does not send the text to us. Selecting Copy text asks the browser to place the prepared message on your clipboard, subject to browser permissions and support. Your device may maintain a clipboard history under its own settings.
Selecting Download .txt creates a text file on your device. The site does not automatically remove that downloaded file. Previewing, copying and downloading do not use a cookie, save a website draft or send an email. Browser autofill and restoration of form fields, where enabled, are controlled by your browser rather than this site's script.
Your controls
You can inspect and delete cookies or stored site data using your browser's privacy settings. You can also clear browsing cache, manage autofill and clipboard permissions, and delete downloaded files using the relevant device controls. These actions are distinct: clearing cookies will not normally delete a file from your Downloads folder.
Core editorial content and native FAQ disclosures remain readable without JavaScript. The mobile dropdown and correspondence preparation functions use JavaScript. You can still contact the editors using your own email application if the preparation tool is unavailable.
