Reading the website

Delivering a web page involves technical information such as an IP address, requested page, access time, browser information and response status. Hosting and security services may process this information to deliver the site, diagnose faults and protect it from misuse. We rely on our legitimate interests in operating a secure, functioning editorial website, balanced against readers' rights.

The published site code does not include analytics trackers, advertising scripts, external fonts or social-media embeds. See the Cookies page for information about browser storage and local functions.

The correspondence slip

Text entered into the Contact tool is processed locally in your browser. Preview, copy and download do not submit it to us. The tool does not store your text in cookies or localStorage. Copying uses your device's clipboard; downloading creates a file on your device. Your browser, operating system and other software may manage clipboard history, downloads or form autofill under their own settings.

If you independently send an email, we receive the information you include, your email address and associated message metadata. We use it to consider your enquiry, assess corrections, respond where appropriate and maintain relevant editorial or administrative records. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in handling correspondence; legal obligations may also require some processing.

Sharing, retention and transfers

Hosting and email providers may process information on our behalf. We may disclose information when legally required or where necessary to establish, exercise or defend legal rights. We do not sell personal information or use correspondence for unsolicited marketing.

We keep correspondence only as long as reasonably needed for its purpose, including resolving an enquiry, retaining necessary source context or meeting legal requirements. Technical logs should be retained only for proportionate operational and security needs. Where providers process personal data outside the United Kingdom, applicable safeguards, such as adequacy arrangements or approved contractual protections, are required.

Your choices and rights

Subject to applicable law, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of your personal information, and object to processing based on legitimate interests. These rights are not absolute. We may need proportionate information to verify your identity before acting on a request. Avoid sending identity documents unless specifically and securely requested.

You can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office or another competent supervisory authority. Contacting us first may help resolve a concern, but is not a condition of making a complaint.

External services and updates

Following an external source link or sending email through your own provider brings that service's privacy practices into scope. We do not control those services. This notice may be updated when our processing changes; the effective date above identifies this version.
